Amniotic Membrane Allograft Injections
What are amniotic membrane allograft injections?
Amniotic fluid contains potent concentrations of natural growth factors, amino acids, cytokines, and cells to provide a rich environment for healing. Amniotic membrane allograft injections are not only safe and effective, but they are also naturally derived. Its restorative effects have been known for hundreds of years but only recently been applied as a groundbreaking treatment option for arthritic pain.
At our centers, Dr. Cottom and Dr. McAlister offer amniotic membrane allograft injections under ultrasound guidance into the ankle joint to enhance your body’s healing capabilities to regenerate new cartilage growth and reduce inflammation.
Where is the amniotic membrane sourced from?
Amniotic membrane is obtained from a fully consenting mother who has undergone a cesarean section of a full-term healthy baby. The fluid is collected only from the amniotic sac of the placenta and is not part of the embryo. Donors are tested through an extensive screening process by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB). After collection, the amniotic membrane is aseptically cleansed and processed in controlled environments and is preserved in optimal conditions for therapeutic use.
What should I expect?
Dr. Cottom and Dr. McAlister will use ultrasound to precisely inject the sample into the affected ankle joint. The treatment is quickly performed on an outpatient basis. Following the injection, it is normal to feel soreness and redness around the injection site for a few days. We may prescribe a pain medication to help manage your discomfort. Most patients can typically resume their regular routine in a few days, but we recommend avoiding any strenuous exercise for about 2 weeks after treatment.
How long is the healing process?
While damaged tissue may take multiple months or even years to completely heal, most patients typically experience pain relief and improved mobility within a couple of weeks. You may require additional injections based on the severity of your disease.
Are there any side effects?
Allergic reactions are extremely rare because amniotic tissue does not contain any allergens that would produce an inflammatory response.
